Christmas lights for Reefton

18th December, 2020

The entire Broadway in Reefton is being lit with lights for Christmas along with the band rotunda and some selected trees.

Volunteers are installing 2,500 metres of solar fairy lights with support from local businesses and funding from Buller District Council.

Council’s socio-economic development officer Rachel Fifield started planning the project months ago and said the support from local business was unanimous.

“When I visited the businesses on Broadway to gauge their enthusiasm, they were all keen to see the project happen”.

Rosco Contractors Ltd supplied the traffic control person and machinery. Mitre 10 supplied the lights a discounted price, and Reefton Hardware supplied all the fixings and screws.

“Typical of Reefton, it’s been a real community effort. Volunteers gave up two nights of their time to put the lights up. It’s been a big job, and we haven’t finished yet, but I think it’s going to look great”.

A few of the building owners are water blasting their buildings in preparation.

“We couldn’t have done it without everyone getting onboard, and we were even rewarded with an ice cream from Shazza Shak takeaways when we were installing her lights”.
