Land becomes abandoned if rates have not been paid for at least three years, the ratepayer cannot be found or is unknown, is deceased with no personal representative or has notified Council they intend to abandon their land.
The Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 sets the parameters for Council to deal with abandoned land.
Council only has the power to dispose of the land and does not become the owner.
Proceeds from any resulting sales, minus relevant costs, will be handed over to the Crown.
Council is not undertaking any sales of abandoned land at this time.
