Work programmes to plough ahead on the Karamea Highway this autumn

Roading improvements are set to continue on the Karamea Highway, with several new projects commencing this month.

Road users should expect to see multiple traffic lights and manual ‘stop/go’ operators managing traffic movements through the work sites to keep road users and our contractors safe from harm.

Pavement rehabilitation south of Karamea township and corner improvements at Tobins Creek and Glasseye Creek kick off the programme in early March.

In mid-March, pavement rehabilitation commences approximately 4.5km south of Kongahu, and another corner, 11km north of the Mōkihinui Bridge gets the corner improvement treatment.

Roading Return to Service Bundle 11, 4km north of Corbyvale might also see some construction activity in late March, however this has yet to be finalised with our contractor.

Road users travelling between Mōkihinui and Little Wanganui should expect travel delays, starting Monday 4 March, which could be up to 35 minutes, and potential for up to 20 minutes for those travelling between Little Wanganui and Karamea.

Some of the corner improvement sites require this extended closure period to allow above-road slip material to be pulled down and removal from site, and for the delivery and placement of rocks for stabilisation.

The contractors involved are working closely with dairy companies and will ensure emergency vehicles are cleared through the sites as quickly as possible.

Council thanks those travelling for their patience whilst works to improve the safety and journey quality on the Karamea Highway are underway.
