Tree planted in Reefton marked the coronation of his Majesty King Charles III, King of New Zealand

Last Saturday a Kōwhai was planted at the King George V Park in Reefton to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, King of New Zealand.

Over 50 people attended the event including representatives from the Inangahua Community Board, Buller District Council, the Sacred Heart School, and the Reefton community. During the celebration a plaque was unveiled by Mayor Jamie Cleine.

Mayor Jamie Cleine says: “This tree-planting is a way of acknowledging the King of New Zealand’s commitments to conservation and sustainability.”

The Coronation of His Majesty Charles III, King of New Zealand was celebrated across Aotearoa with nationwide tree planting events on the weekend of 6 and 7 May. The He Rā Rākau Tītapu - King Charles III Coronation Planting initiative to plant native trees in honour of the new King was led by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Mayor Jamie Cleine says: “This tree will become part of this domain at the heart of Reefton, hence it is great that the local school, the community and council have been involved in planting this Kōwhai.”

The tree was planted above and to the west of an oak tree that was planted for Prince Charles 40th birthday. The Inangahua Silver Band played the national anthem and God save the King.

King Charles III will be the 40th monarch crowned in Westminster Abbey in London. King Charles III will become head of the Commonwealth, an association of 56 independent countries and 2.5 billion people. For 14 of these countries, as well as the UK, the King is head of state.

He is the head of state (King) of New Zealand, Australia, Canada and other countries around the world including some in the Pacific and the Caribbean.
