Buller District Council

Media Release – Responsible camping ambassadors returning

5th October, 2020

Buller District Council has secured funding from the Responsible Camping Fund for the third year in a row.

Group Manager Regulatory Services Sean Judd says the $257,000 will be rolled out in a similar manner to last year.

“The money will pay for the ambassador programme that was so successful last summer, along with toilet servicing, waste management and responsible camping area maintenance.”

The funding is made available on condition that the initiatives will be in place in time for the start of the peak holiday season.

“With summer on the way people will be planning their holidays and we are expecting a good number of visitors to Buller District.

Once again, we’ll have a team of warranted officers who will educate campers about their responsibilities and encourage compliant behaviour from our visitors. “

The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment administers the $80m fund on behalf of the government which is designed to help encourage responsible camping around New Zealand.

Recruitment to fill the positions will start soon with six officers to be on patrol around the district by early November.
