Westport Floating Basin Maintenance Dredging

04 Jul 2025

The dredge Kawatiri will commence maintenance dredging of the Westport Floating Basin on or about 9 July 2025. Dredging operations are likely to be ongoing for up to 3 months.

During all dredging operations, the Kawatiri will be severely restricted in her ability to manoeuvre, and all vessels are required to keep well clear. Kawatiri is a large ship being 1001GT and there are specific by-laws that apply to this size vessel that all port users must be aware of and comply with.

Mariners are reminded to keep well clear of the Kawatiri at all times in the basin, river and bar.

Please contact the Dredge Master or the Harbour Master who will permit vessels to enter the exclusion zone provided that:

  1. Prior direct permission is obtained on VHF Ch 14 from the Dredge Master and:
  2. That all instructions given by the Dredge Master with respect to navigating within 500m of Kawatiri are complied with.

Vessel operators are also reminded of the following requirements:

  • No person shall attempt a crossing of the Bar unless a listening watch is maintained on Marine VHF Radio Channel 14, if such a radio is on board.
  • Importantly only one vessel may cross the bar at any one time.

There will be a need from time to time for some vessels berthed on the northern side of the pontoons to relocate briefly while Kawatiri works in those areas.

If your vessel is affected Harbour or dredge staff will contact you to arrange relocation.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

Contact the dredge on VHF channel 14 or Harbourmaster on 021959279.
