Roading Return to Service projects making headway in Buller

07 Feb 2024

Roading and civil contractors continue to make great progress with vital repair works across the Buller District, ensuring safer journeys for the summer and into the future.

A total of 82 projects have been grouped into 12 bundles, with 47 projects already completed and 11 projects currently under construction.

The entire programme has a forecast construction budget of $10.1 million, with approximately
$6 million in physical construction completed over the past six months.

This funding was received from Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency for the reinstatement of the roads in the Buller District that were damaged by the two significant rain events in July 2021 and February 2022.

A combined team of over 40 construction staff from 15 contracted or sub-contracted companies have been onsite across Buller working on these projects.

The Denniston Road has seen the largest concentration of significant projects to date and is well on its way to the completion of five new retaining walls by the end of February.

A significant worksite at Christmas Creek on Powerhouse Road, involving the refurbishment of the temporary bridge was completed in December.

The temporary bridge was installed after the existing bridge was washed away. It was later removed by crane, refurbished on site with re-built wing walls, abutments and approaches and is now back in place.

The Karamea Highway sees a return-to-construction focus in mid-February as the first of three remaining bundles of work commences at a site 3.3 km north of the Mōkihinui Bridge.
