What do I need to consider when erecting an election sign?
Council's Election Sign Policy, governs how, when and under what conditions election signs can be installed in the Buller District. This policy applies to local authority elections, parliamentary elections, by-elections, and referendums.
The policy provides election specific guidance to assist the community, candidates and political parties to understand Council's expectations and the requirements of other agencies.
The policy references the Te Tai o Poutini, Electoral Act 1993, Local Electoral Act 2001, any applicable bylaws, and any requirements of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
Combined these set out the rules under which election signs can be erected in Buller.
The Te Tai o Poutini Plan (TTPP) and the Buller District Council's Control of Advertising Signs bylaw provide the main rules around signs:
- display timeframe (TTPP and Electoral Commission)
- removal timeframes (TTPP & bylaw)
- size, height, location (TTPP & bylaw)
- use of Council-controlled land and public spaces (bylaw)
- Council's compliance and enforcement processes (bylaw)
If your sign is on, adjacent to, or visible from a State Highway, your sign must comply with the requirements of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
Election signs may only be erected with the permission of the landowner or occupier. Candidates and political parties are responsible for obtaining any required permissions before a sign is installed.
