Reduce speed to save lives in Buller

23 Apr 2026

Driving within speed limits on state highways to save lives will be the main focus for the Buller part of the national Better Together campaign.

The Buller District Council is supporting New Zealand Police, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and ACC throughout April and May for the campaign, which urges drivers to take a simple but life-saving step:  Drive within the speed limit – it’s a limit, not a target.

Buller Mayor Chris Russell says the initiative aims to deter Buller people from speeding.

“People can get complacent because they know the roads and where the passing spots might be.  But we can’t control things like wildlife or stock on roads, weather and other drivers.  What we can control to improve everyone’s chances to be safe on the road: Our speed. From Punakaiki to Karamea to Inangahua, Maruia/Springs Junction, Reefton and Ikamatua, each of us can make a small change to drop our speed – and that will ultimately save lives,” Mayor Russell says.

Over the next few weeks people will be reminded through advertising and education of the consequences of speeding, and this will be supported by Police enforcement activities.

Tasman District Road Policing Manager Inspector Martin Tunley said local Police would be focusing on state highways because around New Zealand over recent years that is where tragic fatal accidents have been most likely to occur.

“While the cause may have been something else, like distraction or fatigue, speed will always be a factor as to whether someone dies or survives a crash. Even a small increase in speed multiplies the risk of crash and harm exponentially.

“So, Police will be out there enforcing the speed limits because we know by doing so, especially during a campaign, together we can reduce fatal crashes,” Inspector Tunley said.
