Community feedback phase concludes for West Coast Local Government Reform project

08 Jul 2026

The community engagement phase of the West Coast Local Government Reform Head Start Project has now concluded. The final community drop-in session was held in Franz Josef on Friday and online feedback closed on Monday 6 July.

Project Lead Ashley Stuart said the project team was pleased with the level of community participation over the relatively short engagement period.

"Considering the timeframe available, we're encouraged by both the attendance at our community drop-in sessions and the number of people who took the time to provide feedback online. We appreciate everyone who engaged with the process, whether by attending a session, asking questions or making a submission."

A total of 196 pieces of feedback were received from across the region, including:

  • Buller: 89
  • Grey: 65
  • Westland: 42

Over the engagement period, community drop-in sessions were held throughout the West Coast, providing residents with an opportunity to learn more about the Head Start process, ask questions and share what they believe is important for the future of local government in the region.

"The purpose of this first phase was to listen to our communities and understand the values, priorities and concerns that people want considered as we begin exploring future options. We heard a wide range of perspectives from across the Coast, and that feedback will play an important role in shaping the next stage of the project."

The project team is analysing community feedback and preparing a summary report. That information will help inform the development of a draft Outline Proposal, which will be presented to each of the West Coast councils for consideration before being submitted to the Government by 9 August.

Ashley Stuart said it was important to remember that the proposal being developed is an outline proposal rather than a final decision.

"This remains the beginning of a much longer process. The Outline Proposal is intended to identify potential opportunities and provide a basis for further discussion with Government. No decisions have been made about the future structure of local government on the West Coast."

The project team wanted to thank everyone who contributed their time and ideas throughout the engagement process, she said.

"We know people are passionate about the future of their communities, and we appreciate everyone who took the opportunity to have their say."
