Council announces rates payment options

Buller District Council says it recognises the community is facing challenges after the flooding event and Covid-19 Alert Level 4 Lockdown.

Group manager commercial and corporate services Rod Fox says some flood affected residents and business owners may be worried about their finances and their concerns may be compounded due to the Covid-19 alert level 4 lockdown.

“One of those concerns may be around their ability to pay the first instalment of rates for the new financial year.”

At its meeting on Wednesday (25 August), council decided that it will not charge late payment penalties to any ratepayer who cannot meet this deadline, or can only partially pay them, due to the financial impact lockdown or the flood event has had on them.

The first rate instalment is due to be paid by Monday 30 August. Mr Fox says if ratepayers can pay the first instalment on time they should do so.

“However, any ratepayer who cannot meet the deadline, or can only part pay them must contact council and enter into a repayment plan.

They will have up to six-months to clear the balance and will not be charged late payment penalties if they have contacted council to make a special arrangement.”
