Voters have two weeks left to vote in the Westport Ward by-election

02 Oct 2026

Voting for the Westport Ward by-election is well underway, with two weeks to go until voting closes on Friday 16 October. Voters will elect one new councillor for the Westport Ward in the by-election.

Buller District Council Electoral Officer, Anthony Morton is urging electors in the Westport Ward that haven’t already voted, to do so as soon as possible.

“Voting is being conducted by postal vote, and electors should have received their voter packs by now. To vote, simply complete your voting paper, seal it in the envelope provided, and either mail it or drop it into one of the three orange vote bins provided in the Westport urban area” Mr Morton says.

Electors choosing to post their completed voting papers should do so by 9 October to ensure they are received on time to be counted.
Vote bins are located at Buller District Council’s Westport office at 6-8 Brougham Street, Fresh Choice Westport at 18 Fonblanque Street and New World Westport, 244 Palmerston Street. The vote bins will be removed at midday on Friday 16 October, so electors have until then to return their vote via that option.

Anyone over 18 years of age and living in the Westport Ward area who has not received a voter pack can still vote via the ‘special vote’ process.

Special votes can be collected during normal opening hours from the Buller District Council’s office at 6-8 Brougham Street, Westport up to midday on Friday 16 October. Special voters must complete a statutory declaration to confirm they haven’t already voted. Council staff will provide the declaration form and special voting papers.
