Solar power set up for community facilities
Work has started on the installation of solar power at key Buller community facilities.
Funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority’s (EECA) Community Renewable Energy Fund, the solar installation is designed to enhance emergency preparedness and energy resilience of targeted community buildings.
Group Manager Infrastructure Services Simon Bastion says community buildings are often used in civil defence events to protect people during and immediately after emergency events.
“The fund’s investment in solar and battery systems for these buildings will also provide these facilities with renewable energy for day-to-day use, resulting in lower energy costs,” he says.
The six sites selected are NBS Theatre Westport, Carters Beach Community Hall, Charleston Community Hall, Maruia Community Hall, Ngakawau Community Hall and Reefton Hall. The contract was awarded to ESL and subcontractor Sunergy Solar Ltd.
“The target is to have all installations completed by September 2026,” Mr Bastion says.
The Buller District Council was allocated funding of up to $264,000 and Council has committed $66,000 of co-funding.
