Short-term relief announced for Originair’s Westport-Wellington flight service
An interim agreement allowing the vital air service between Westport and Wellington to continue has been struck, with support from Development West Coast (DWC) and consideration from Government.
DWC has agreed to provide one month of financial support, which will allow services to resume on the route from 18 May, while discussions with central government regarding an ongoing solution continue.
Buller District Mayor Chris Russell welcomes this announcement. “We are grateful for Development West Coast’s support and look forward to continued collaboration between DWC, Originair and Kānoa as we work towards a longer-term solution for our community. This announcement provides Buller residents and businesses with a degree of certainty while options which are sustainable into the future are worked though with the relevant government Ministers.”
The Westport-Wellington route connects the West Coast with domestic and international travel hubs providing lifeline access to healthcare and other Government services, alongside key connections for business and tourism.
“While this is a very positive development, we remain committed to pursuing regional connectivity options that do not place additional burden on ratepayers, while ensuring the route and wider economic development opportunities remain active” concludes Mayor Russell.
