Rock protection works for Little Wanganui oxidation ponds underway soon

25 Jun 2026

Rock protection will soon be installed to stabilise and reinforce the riverbank adjacent to the Little Wanganui wastewater oxidation ponds, following inspections conducted earlier this year.

The inspections identified significant erosion of the riverbank near the ponds, which are located on the true right bank of Glasseye Creek, south of the confluence of Glasseye Creek and the Little Wanganui River.

Approximately 1200 tonnes of locally sourced rock will be used to form a protective rock wall structure over an area of approximately 100 metres, with the intervention serving to preserve the structural integrity and longevity of the riverbank by minimising scouring and undercutting.

This will protect the oxidation ponds from potential damage in the future and safeguard Glasseye Creek from waterway contamination via uncontrolled discharge from the oxidation ponds into the wider river and estuary ecosystem.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “With the ever-increasing frequency and intensity of local rain events, these protection works are a timely defence for a significant component of the Karamea area’s wastewater infrastructure. Council is pleased be able to integrate local raw materials and expertise into the project planning.”

The overall project budget for the work is $143,000 which will be funded from the Little Wanganui wastewater capital expenditure account and the depreciation reserve.

The contractor appointed is Karamea-based SM Lowe Contracting Limited. Works are expected to commence on 30 June and be completed by 31 July.

The Little Wanganui wastewater scheme services approximately 60 connections.
