Nomination period for Westport Ward by-election closing Thursday

04 Aug 2026

With less than two days until the nomination period closes, no nominations have yet been submitted for the vacant Westport Ward councillor position. Buller District Council Electoral Officer Anthony Morton is encouraging those intending to submit a nomination to do so as soon as possible to allow time for documents to be checked.

“There are a number of checks that need to be made with each nomination, so receiving the documents early allows time to correct any problems, if found” Mr Morton said.

An information sheet and nomination form are available from the council’s offices in Westport or Reefton, on the Buller District Council website under council elections, or by phoning the election helpline number: 0800 666 048.

To stand, candidates must be over 18, a New Zealand citizen, and enrolled as a parliamentary elector. They are also required to pay a $200 deposit. Each nomination must be supported by two parliamentary electors enrolled for addresses within the Westport Ward, who must sign the nomination form.

Chief Executive Officer Simon Pickford said: “This role offers the chance for a passionate community advocate to join the Westport Ward councillors in shaping a stronger future for the ward and district.”

The nomination period closes at midday on Thursday 6 August. A list of the confirmed candidates will be advertised as soon as possible following the close of nominations. If no valid nominations are received by the 6 August deadline, the council will need to re-advertise the vacancy.
