New variable speed limits to be introduced around Buller schools in September
Buller District Council is introducing 30 km/h variable speed limits outside all schools in the Buller District to improve safety for students during drop off and pick up times.
The new speed limits are designed to improve safety and comply with the Land Transport Rule: Setting of speed limits 2024, which requires variable 30 km/h speed limits outside Category 1 schools during school travel periods.
The speed limits were approved under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 under the director approval process and were not subject to public consultation.
The 30 km/h speed limit will only apply during designated school travel periods at the beginning and end of the school day, with the existing speed limit applying outside those times.
Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says drivers should watch for new signage and slow down when the variable speed limit is active.
“The new variable speed limits will help improve safety for children travelling to and from school as well as give greater assurance for parents, caregivers and residents in school zones.”
The new variable speed limits will come into effect progressively during September.
