Mokihinui Campground’s new wastewater system project completed
Buller District Council (BDC) has completed installation and commissioning of a new, fit-for-purpose wastewater system at the Mokihinui Campground, with the replacement system capable of supporting a peak load of 400 users per day.
It also provides a much-needed Northern Buller motorhome wastewater dump station for self-contained vehicles. Previously, these vehicles have had to travel back to Westport or on to Karamea to empty their tanks.
The project was originally scheduled to be completed in 2025, but was delayed due to unsuitable ground conditions, and design challenges including dispersal field location meant the project could not commence until April 2026.
Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “An innovative design solution saw the dispersal field moved from a section of the domain’s playing field into the adjacent road reserve. This area is now due to be reinstated with plantings of native grasses and shrubs.”
The modern, low maintenance Advanced Enviro-Septic system was designed by local firm Chris J Coll Surveying, with contractors Dwan and Andrews of Hokitika delivering the project on time and under budget.
The upgrade was 50% co-funded by central government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund, with BDC’s share allocated from the Reserves Contribution Fund.
“This project is an important infrastructure upgrade for the Mokihinui Campground, increasing capacity and reliability in an environmentally sensitive manner. We are confident this will support the campground’s sustainability into the future” concludes Mr Blom.
With just site rehabilitation costs to be finalised, the total project cost is expected to be around $672,000 +GST - $127,000 under budget.
