Little Wanganui Bridge due for deck replacement and guard rail upgrade

The Little Wanganui Bridge is scheduled to undergo safety improvements in late 2026 to extend the bridge’s service life and load-carrying capacity, allowing it to accommodate a wider range of vehicle types and transportation activities.

The existing single-lane bridge, which was constructed in 1931, is a critical transport link on the Karamea Highway, vital for residents, freight operators, emergency services, and businesses alike.

The bridge structure has been inspected, and although the main steel beams and substructure are in good condition, the timber deck is deteriorating. The deck will undergo a full structural replacement via installation of prefabricated panels, with the bridge and approach guardrails upgraded at the same time.

Acting Group Manager Infrastructure Services Brent Oldham says: “This upgrade will also allow high productivity motor vehicles (HPMVs) full access to this important transport route.

“HPMVs are heavy vehicles that exceed standard weight or dimension limits and must operate under permits on approved routes. They are designed to carry more freight in fewer trips, with economic benefits for both producers and consumers. The use of this class of vehicles is understandably increasing over time.”

WestReef Services Limited has been awarded the contract for this work, which will be funded through NZTA – Waka Kotahi’s National Land Transport Programme at the 100% financial assistance rate, due to the Karamea Highway’s status as a Special Purpose Road.

The upgrades will be carried out using staged construction methods, and temporary traffic management will be employed to allow the work to be completed safely. The work is expected to take eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

“Residents should prepare for overnight bridge closures, and limited closures during daylight hours – road closure dates will be confirmed closer to the start of the construction period. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times” Mr Oldham explains.

Buller District Council will work closely with the Karamea community, emergency services, freight operators and other affected stakeholders to minimise disruption during this period.
