Dredge Kawatiri to be sold
The Buller District Council (BDC) has resolved to sell the Kawatiri dredge and has a company interested in buying it
At yesterday’s Council meeting, BDC Group Manager Corporate Services Lesley Crichton provided councillors with a report outlining recommendations, including selling the dredge to a company that had indicated an interest.
Ms Crichton said staff had investigated disposal options for the Kawatiri dredge, including continuing to look for a better offer through a broker for another six months, or stripping, scrapping or scuttling the vessel in-house.
The report outlined that the Kawatiri dredge had been part of Westport Harbour since the 1980s. As there was a very limited need now for dredging, and out of port work had not materialised recently, it had been laid up and its condition was deteriorating, causing further financial strain on Council.
Councillors have asked the Chief Executive to complete negotiations with the Interested party. The bell pump will be retained by the BDC for use in the lagoon. Discussions with DWC and Kanoa who part-funded the pump will also be finalised.
