Cross-agency solar project boosts Buller’s community resilience

Buller District Council’s collaborative project to install photovoltaic (solar power) systems and battery banks at key community buildings throughout the district has come to fruition, with the official handover of the completed venture taking place at Westport’s NBS Theatre on Wednesday last week.

The project has been made possible via support from the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority’s (EECA) Community Renewable Energy Fund (CREF).

Council’s Group Manager Regulatory Services, Simon Bastion says: “The installation of solar equipment at community venues enhances emergency preparedness and the energy resilience of community buildings.”

Other venues across the district which have had the solar equipment installed are the Reefton Community Centre, Maruia Community Hall, Ngakawau Community Centre, Carters Beach Community Hall and the Charleston Community Hall.

Mr Bastion explains: “Our smaller, rural facilities in more isolated locations play a vital role during Civil Defence emergencies as they are often utilised as part of the response, during and immediately after emergency events. The initiative provides another layer of support and resilience for our Civil Defence functions, which play a key role in supporting our community in emergencies.”

The contract was awarded to ESL and subcontractor Sunergy Solar Ltd, with work commencing at the sites in June this year and finished well ahead of the original September completion date.

“This project is a great example of community groups, council and government agencies working together for the benefit of our wider district. EECA’s support has been invaluable, lowering ongoing energy costs and allowing us to achieve a common goal in providing a sustainable community energy solution not only for the here and now, but also for future generations.

“Council is keen to continue working with EECA towards making our remaining community halls and civic buildings more energy efficient wherever possible” concludes Mr Bastion.
