By-election dates confirmed for Westport Ward

09 Jul 2026

A by-election will be held for Buller District Council’s Westport Ward to fill the seat left by the recent resignation of former councillor Colin Reidy.

Mr Reidy’s resignation last month automatically triggered the by-election, and the subsequent process for this begins with a call for nominations for the vacant position.

To provide the Buller community with key information, a dedicated page on council’s website offers Westport Ward residents and those considering standing for the vacant seat details about the by-election. A public notice has been published on council’s website and in local newspapers directing people to this information.

Nominations inviting individuals to stand for the vacant seat are now open and close at midday on 6 August 2026.

Buller District Council CEO Simon Pickford said: “This is an opportunity for a community-minded person to join the other Westport Ward councillors and work for the betterment of the ward and district.”
A nomination form and information sheet for the by-election are available on council's website.

If more than one nomination is received for the vacancy, a voting process will be required. Voting papers will be mailed to Westport Ward electors in mid-September, with voting closing on 16 October 2026.
