Media Release – Motorhome rally boosts Reefton economy

Reefton was the destination for 475 vans as part of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) top of the south rally over Labour weekend. The rally injected approximately $80,000 into the local economy. The rally arrived in Reefton on Friday 23 October and departed on Monday 26 October.

Reefton is the newest motorhome friendly town in New Zealand. Labour weekend gave travellers the opportunity to join in on the 150 year celebrations of Reefton being the first town of light in New Zealand.

The rally was hosted at the Reefton racecourse. With the hire of marquees and seating as well as donations to the local volunteer fire brigade and Reefton Area School for lunches boosting the local economy.

Councillor John Bougen said; “The rally added to the fantastic atmosphere for what was a weekend full of celebrations in Reefton. The economic benefits for the town and the district are an added bonus. We were delighted to host the NZMCA rally in Reefton and hope to see the travellers back again soon.”

It is understood some of the rally attendees also made the trip through to Westport on the Saturday to enjoy the Westport Whitebait Festival.
