Westport Wastewater Treatment Plant issue 31/3/26

01 Apr 2026

Yesterday, we experienced an issue at the Westport Wastewater Treatment Plant involving a build up of suspended material (scum). The issue at the treatment plant was resolved by this morning.

Some of this material overflowed into the clear water area of the plant.

During this time, the treatment process may not have worked as effectively as normal.

The plant continues to be closely monitored, and treatment levels are being adjusted as needed.

Warning signs are currently in place as a precaution to let the public know of a potential health risk.

Council advises all water users to follow the wastewater overflow signage and avoid recreational activities in the water below the Buller Bridge for 48 hours.

If you have any concerns, please contact Council on 0800 807 239 or email info@bdc.govt.nz with the subject line 'Wastewater Treatment Plant issue'

Buller District Council apologises for this incident.
