A three-year programme of upgrades at the Westport and Reefton Transfer Stations, designed to ensure Buller’s waste facilities remain fit for purpose into the future is now complete.

The main works undertaken were:

  • Purchase and installation of a new weighbridge for the Westport Transfer Station
  • Refurbishment of the Westport recycling facility’s storage shed, including its roof, walls and electrical system
  • Refurbishment of Westport’s Material Recovery Facility (roof and walls)
  • Improved security systems at the Westport Transfer Station (additional CCTV cameras, sensor lights, security alarm and upgraded fencing)
  • Installation of a new concrete platform at the Reefton Transfer Station’s glass handling facility
  • Repairs to the Reefton Transfer Station’s recycling storage sheds
  • Multiple minor improvements at the Reefton Transfer Station, including site office refurbishment, traffic line marking, refuse handling area maintenance and new signage.
  • Installation of new entrance gates at both the Westport and Reefton Transfer Stations

The maintenance and improvement project, which began in 2022, had a total cost of $406,000 and was funded by general rates.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “It is great to see this comprehensive programme of waste facility improvements completed after several years of sustained effort.

The enhancements mean our facilities are safeguarded and future proofed, with far-reaching benefits for both our facility operators, and local residents and visitors who form the Transfer Stations’ customer base.”
