West Coast communities urged to prepare as severe weather approaches

20 Oct 2025

West Coast Emergency Management (WCEM) is closely monitoring an incoming weather system expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and hazardous coastal conditions across the region this week.

WCEM works closely with Council teams to have staff on standby as we track developments and prepare to respond if needed.

MetService has issued a number of warnings for the West Coast and wider South Island.

These conditions may impact travel, power, and access to some communities.

Claire Brown, Manager for WCEM, says that early preparation can make a significant difference during these kinds of weather events.

“We’re keeping a very close eye on this system and support our council teams to respond if needed,” Brown says. “We’re asking everyone across the West Coast to use today to get ready, secure your property, prepare for possible power outages, and avoid unnecessary travel.”
“People camping or travelling across the region, should take extra care. This is a powerful weather system, and being caught out in an exposed area overnight could be dangerous.”

For households and communities:

  • Secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, and loose items
  • Clear gutters, drains, and roadside channels
  • Charge phones and power banks; check torches and emergency radios
  • Prepare grab bags, especially in flood-prone areas
  • Check in on neighbours who may need assistance

For travellers and campers:

  • Avoid parking or camping near rivers, beaches, or under trees
  • Choose safe, sheltered locations before nightfall
  • Postpone travel across alpine routes if possible

Brown emphasised the close coordination taking place behind the scenes:

“Our emergency coordination team is linked in with local councils, contractors, lifelines, and national partners. We’re reviewing forecasts, monitoring risk areas, and making sure that if something escalates, we’re ready to act.”

“Our communities are used to these kinds of weather events, but that doesn’t mean we take them lightly. Preparedness saves lives and reduces damage, every action counts.”
