Water conservation update

04 Feb 2025

The Water Conservation Notice for Westport, Carters Beach and Punakaiki remains in place.

Westport Water Supply
The raw water reservoir level is currently at 87.5%, with a reduction rate of approximately 1% per day since the water conservation notice was issued last week. Fortunately, last week’s rain provided a slight increase in intake flow, but it remains lower than the town’s demand for water.

The latest weather forecast indicates that Westport and Carters Beach will experience a dry week with minimal rainfall, which may further reduce intake flow over the coming days. As a result, the water conservation notice remains in effect.

Punakaiki Water Supply
The treated water reservoir level is currently at 92%. The forecast strongly suggests little to no rainfall for the coming week, increasing the chances of water supply shortages in Punakaiki.

The recent storage upgrade project at the Klip Tank has significantly increased storage capacity, providing residents with greater water reserves during dry periods. However, due to the uncertain weather conditions, the water conservation notice remains in effect.

How can you help?
Residents are requested to follow Council’s water conservation tips and avoid water wastage, such as unattended garden hoses or sprinklers.

Council will provide regular updates here and via the BDC Facebook page.

Westport, Carters Beach and Punakaiki residents are asked to share this information with neighbours, friends, and family.

Council appreciates residents’ cooperation with conserving during this time and apologises for any inconvenience.
