Water conservation notice - Westport, Carters Beach and Punakaiki
Due to hot weather and limited rainfall across the Buller District in the past two weeks, our water intake flows are decreasing while town water demand remains high.
To address this situation, Council is issuing a Water Conservation Notice for Westport, Carters Beach, and Punakaiki. Residents are asked to reduce their water use immediately to prevent levels dropping further.
With no significant rain in the forecast, the Westport raw water reservoir capacity is expected to decrease by 1–2% daily, depending on intake flow and usage.
Punakaiki's water intake shows signs of running dry, meaning that if the intake flow ceases, the treated water reservoir will not be replenished
If reservoir levels drop below 70%, restricted use orders will come into effect, followed by essential use orders if reservoir levels fall below 50%. These orders will remain in place until the reservoir has sufficiently recovered.
Council encourages everyone to be mindful of their water use and avoid wastage. Please ensure sprinklers and hoses are not left running unattended, and repair any leaks inside your property immediately, as even small leaks can lead to significant water loss. Using water-efficient appliances and fixtures, watering gardens during the cooler hours to minimise evaporation, and turning off taps properly after use can all help conserve water. Consider using a bucket instead of a hose for outdoor cleaning to reduce consumption
Council will provide regular updates via this webpage and the BDC Facebook page.
