UPDATED: Precautionary boil water notice: Reefton

05 Mar 2026

UPDATED 2:00 PM 6/3/26

precautionary Boil Water Notice has been issued for Reefton.

Council advises consumers to boil all drinking water and any water used for food preparation until further notice.

Boil tap water in your electric jug/kettle until it switches off automatically or bring it to a rolling boil in a pot for at least one minute before using.

Additional advice for food businesses and hospitality operators: During the precautionary Boil Water Notice, plumbed-in coffee machines, ice makers, and post-mix/beverage dispensers should not be used unless operators can confirm the equipment brings water to a full rolling boil. Standard commercial machines may not heat water sufficiently to eliminate the risk of contamination. Businesses should instead use pre-boiled and cooled water or bottled water for drinks and food preparation, and flush and sanitise water lines and equipment before returning them to service once the notice is lifted.

This notice is a result of recent routine testing indicating contamination in a specific area of the reticulation. Further testing of the water supply is being carried out.

Council will advise when the boil water notice has been removed. Read the latest updates in our 6 March media release.

Reefton residents are asked to share this information with neighbours, friends and family.

Council apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates residents' cooperation during this time.

Updates will be posted here, on the BDC Facebook page and provided on Coast FM.
