Update: Orange heavy rain warning 21 October 2025

21 Oct 2025

West Coast Emergency Management (WCEM) is continuing to work closely with councils and agencies to monitor the heavy rain and severe gales this week.

The latest from MetService advises rain warnings continue for Buller and Westland ranges.  The Buller warning period is through to mid-afternoon today, and for Westland this extends through to Thursday afternoon.

WCEM continues to meet with councils and agencies daily to share information and preparations.

Claire Brown, Manager for WCEM, says that conditions continue to improve into the evening, however we are still advised to expect heavy rain and severe gales again over Thursday.
“We’re expecting a small reprieve in the weather tomorrow, but another strong weather system is set to affect much of the region once again on Thursday” Ms Brown says. “We’re asking everyone again to secure your property, prepare for possible power outages, and avoid unnecessary travel.”

People camping or travelling across the region, should take extra care.

 For households and communities:
•    Secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, and loose items
•    Clear gutters, drains, and roadside channels
•    Charge phones and power banks; check torches and emergency radios
•    Prepare grab bags, especially in flood-prone areas
•    Check in on neighbours who may need assistance

For travellers and campers:
•    Avoid parking or camping near rivers, beaches, or under trees
•    Choose safe, sheltered locations before nightfall
•    Postpone travel across alpine routes if possible
•    Check MetService and NZTA websites for the latest warnings and road updates

Ms Brown noted in fast changing spring weather that it can be easy to get caught out.

“Remember to check the weather and roading conditions before you leave home.  If you are travelling further afield it’s always good to have some emergency supplies with you”.
