Unauthorised access to harbour facilities a significant risk to public safety
Young people swimming over to the jetty in Westport Harbour’s Floating Basin from the boat ramp are putting themselves at risk in a working commercial environment.
Harbourmaster Domonic Venz says: “We have noticed increasing numbers of youths accessing the jetty by swimming across, then either jumping off the walkway bridge which provides access to the marina berths, or the jetty itself. Some have also been seen climbing aboard private fishing vessels.
“This is a serious concern, as the harbour and its facilities are a designated work area where public access is not permitted due to health and safety requirements.”
Harbour staff have visited local schools this week to educate students about dangers of accessing the port areas and recommend whānau with children who frequent the port vicinity unsupervised to discuss the potential risks of unauthorised access with their families.
