Two new members appointed to Buller’s District Licencing Committee

26 Jun 2025

After a successful community recruitment process in April and May, Buller District Council (BDC) has appointed two new District Licencing Committee (DLC) list members.

David Sanders from Little Wanganui, and Dean van Mierlo from Punakaiki are the new appointees.

Mr Sanders has a background in risk assessment and experience on local authority subcommittees, with a strong community focus relevant to the Buller District.

Mr van Mierlo is a practising lawyer, who also has a strong interest in the community and a desire to use his professional skills to benefit the district and its overall wellbeing.

The appointment of the two new community members brings the total number of DLC list members to six. This gives a balanced mix of councillor and community member experience and representation on the committee.

Council is responsible for establishing and maintaining a list of DLC members by selecting and appointing at least three members in total to the DLC, including a chairperson.

As the appointments are for a five-year term, appointees will be able to seamlessly cover two council election cycles.

Group manager Regulatory Services Simon Bastion says: “These appointments not only make it easier for the DLC to meet the quorum requirement of three DLC list members required to hold hearings under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act (2012), but they also allow the community to have a voice and be represented by suitably qualified local candidates.”

The DLC is responsible for determining all new alcohol licences and managers’ certificates plus renewal applications throughout the Buller District.

The DLC makes decisions about new and renewal applications for on-, off- and club licences and special licences, new and renewal applications for manager’s certificates, opposed acting or temporary appointments of managers, variations to licence conditions, temporary authorities and temporary licences and orders to vary, revoke, suspend or cancel a special licence.

“We look forward to working with Mr Sanders and Mr van Mierlo and the wealth of skills and experience they will bring to our District Licencing committee” concludes Mr Bastion.
