Tauranga Bay's public toilet facilities fully functional again

23 Aug 2024

Tauranga Bay’s public amenities are now fully functional again, with the public toilet at the west (Bay House) end of the bay put back in place recently.

The original toilet facilities became unusable as the holding tank needed to be lifted out of the ground because of the rising water table.

The holding tank and foundations were re-designed, and the toilet and its housing reinstalled as part of the recent works.

This project was funded via a 50:50 agreement between Buller District Council and the Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF) and completed in late July 2024, on schedule and within budget.

With the public toilet back in service, visitors to the west end of the bay will no longer need to travel to the Seal Colony carpark to use the facilities.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Michael Aitken says: “Buller District Council is confident that the new design will provide many years of much needed service in one of our district’s most visited and cherished places.”
