Swearing in of Buller’s new council

The new Buller District Council (BDC) will be sworn in next Wednesday, 29 October 2025 at the Clocktower Chambers in Palmerston Street, Westport.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the start of the meeting at 1:00 pm. Once sworn in, the elected members will take part in their first meeting.

There will be limited seating in the Clocktower Chambers, but there will be overflow seating and a screen to view the proceedings in the adjacent room. The swearing-in will also be livestreamed to the council’s YouTube channel, Buller District Council.

The council’s Chief Executive Officer Simon Pickford says: “We have planned a comprehensive new triennium induction process over the new council’s first 100 days and cover council structure, processes and best governance practice.

We look forward to assisting the elected members gain a good understanding of the complex issues and challenges our district faces as we work together to improve the long-term wellbeing of Buller’s community.”

Mr Pickford continues: “In addition to the BDC-specific induction process, the new council will meet with the other West Coast councils at Arahura Marae to be briefed on regional issues and initiatives.
