Sewer repairs planned for Reefton following discovery of pipework obstructions
Buller District Council has confirmed that urgent repair works will soon commence on a section of Reefton’s sewer network, near 70 Broadway, following the detection of obstructions in the system.
Recent CCTV inspections of underground sewer pipes identified both a blockage and partial collapse in a sewer pipe in the laneway between Kelly Street and Smith Street.
During periods of heavy rain, these obstructions mean there is a likelihood that sewage will overflow into the street at this location and in nearby areas.
“While this isn’t a complete pipe collapse, it is a serious issue for the network,” says Anthony Blom, Group Manager Infrastructure Services. “The blockage needs to be removed, and the pipe replaced to avoid overflows and protect public health, especially during wet weather.”
The overall condition of the sewer line was confirmed via CCTV investigation work completed in late June 2025. Council has now analysed the footage and is finalising a staged response plan.
Initial works to clear the obstruction and restore flow are expected to begin by 11 July 2025. Full sewer line replacement between manholes in the affected laneway is planned to follow, with a provisional start date of 25 July 2025. Contingency plans are being implemented should further pipe collapse occur prior to replacement.
Council will contact residents in the area adjacent to the worksite in advance to inform them about timing of works, access requirements and any temporary disruptions to traffic or property access. Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to residents during the project.
These residents are asked to help reduce pressure on the system by minimising water use during heavy rain until repairs are complete. Council will continue to clean up contaminated material after any heavy rain event which results in an overflow.
Council is also urgently looking at a pumping option which is suitable for use during high rainfall events to minimise the occurrence of overflows.
Reefton has a combined stormwater and wastewater system, and any stormwater overflow in Reefton is likely to be contaminated with sewage. Residents are advised to avoid contact with any stormwater overflows throughout the town, and particularly in the affected area.
“We appreciate the community’s support and patience as we work through this issue,” says Mr Blom. “This is an essential piece of work to safeguard Reefton’s infrastructure and public health.”
Further updates will be provided via council’s website, Facebook page, local radio and print media as work progresses.
