Revitalised Westport street flags celebrate youth creativity in Buller

24 Nov 2025

Westport’s new youth-designed street flags are now flying along Palmerston and Brougham Streets, following a special ceremony at the Clocktower Chambers this morning.

Mayor Chris Russell joined finalists and their whānau to award certificates and unveil the designs, which will brighten the town centre for the holiday season.

This community project invited tamariki from all four Westport primary schools to create artwork representing “What we love most about Westport.”

A total of 112 children aged 5 to 11 years submitted designs, with 20 finalists shortlisted and 10 winning artworks selected for installation.

The final choices were made by a dedicated judging panel representing Buller’s creative arts community, including members of the Buller Arts Council, Promoting Buller, and Kawatiri Youth Voice.

The panel’s involvement added even more weight to the collaborative spirit behind the competition and ensured a fair, balanced selection reflecting the diversity of ideas from local primary students.

A representative from Promoting Buller acknowledged the enthusiasm shown by all participants: “The depth of creativity and talent we have in Buller is astounding. Our young artists have shown their passion for Westport with great mana.”

Mayor Chris Russell says the strength of this initiative came from the support behind it.

“It was lovely to see our schools, families, and community backing these young artists all the way. The new flags add colour and vibrancy to the town and reflect local pride.”

Mayor Russell presented certificates to all 20 finalists at the Clocktower Chambers before the group walked to Palmerston Street to see the flags flying.

The winning designs were created by:

• Ella Knudsen
• Braxten Coleman
• Willa Taylor
• Ellie Mundy
• Sophia Campion
• Flora Griffiths
• Indi Mae Gordon
• Tylah Stevenson
• Eliza Craddock-Hart
• Lilly Bell

This project has been funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Palmerston Street and Brougham Street are designated state highways.
