Replacement of Mokihinui Campground effluent system set to begin

10 Apr 2026

Construction works for replacement of the sewage treatment system at the Buller District Council-owned Mokihinui Campground are set to start on Monday.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “This project will see the existing system, which is undersized for the campground’s requirements, replaced with new primary treatment septic tanks and pump infrastructure, connected to an Advanced Enviro-Septic™ (AES) discharge field.”

A motorhome dump station will also be installed at the campground, constructed in accordance with New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) specifications and in line with upgrades to the wastewater and stormwater systems at the campground.

The contract for this work has been awarded to Hokitika-based plumbers Dwan and Andrews, who completed installation of the new wastewater system at the Punakaiki Campground in 2025.

“The works involve supply and installation of the new primary treatment system, connection of existing wastewater facilities to the new system, and in doing so, de-commissioning of the old system, along with the addition of the new dump station.

“The contractors will start onsite on Monday 13 April, with work ramping up as equipment and components of the new treatment system arrive. The target completion date is 30 May 2026” explains Mr Blom.

Council has received funding from the Ministry of Business, Employment and Innovation’s (MBIE) Tourism Infrastructure Fund for installation of the effluent system. MBIE will fund 50% while BDC will fund the remaining 50%. The total project budget is $800,000.

Resource and building consents have been granted for the work by the West Coast Regional Council and Buller District Council respectively.

“The new effluent system is a much-needed improvement for the campground, which will allow it to cater for increasing number of visitors to Northern Buller while being able to deal with wastewater discharges appropriately and responsibly” concludes Mr Blom.
