Reefton’s public toilets at risk of closure

24 Jun 2025

Continued vandalism of Reefton’s public toilet facilities could see these vital conveniences closed, a negative outcome for both the local community and the many travellers who visit the town.

Reefton has council-owned and maintained toilet facilities situated on Broadway, and additional toilets located nearby on The Strand, which council funds regular cleaning of.

Ongoing acts of serious vandalism have become commonplace, including graffiti, broken fixtures such as toilet roll holders and door handles, and most concerningly, incidents involving faeces being deliberately smeared on walls.

This antisocial behaviour is not only unacceptable, but also extremely distressing for cleaning staff, who should not be subjected to this

Group Manager Community Services Krissy Trigg says: “If the vandalism continues, the future of these public facilities is at risk. The community and visitors passing through are encouraged to treat these facilities with respect, for the sake of those who use them and those who work hard to maintain them.”

Anyone who witnesses acts of vandalism taking place is encouraged to contact the Police via their 105 (non-emergency) line.
