Potential impact of proposed local government reforms on West Coast council governance
Central government announced yesterday that local government structure is due to undergo reform, moving ultimately towards a unitary governance model, with the abolishment of regional councillors.
If the proposed bill is eventually passed, for the following two-year period, a Combined Territories Board (CTB) would be established. This would comprise of the three West Coast district council Mayors, who would provide governance over the former regional council’s functions.
Buller Mayor Chris Russell says: “West Coast councils are already working closely together on how we can share services and increase efficiencies. We welcome any proposals that reduce costs to our communities; however, we are adamant that this must not be at the cost of our local voice and identity.”
