Outcome of Chief Executive’s annual remuneration review announced

03 Jun 2025

Buller District Council has today released the outcome of its 2025 annual review of Chief Executive Simon Pickford’s remuneration.

As in previous years, to carry out this process, council has sought independent salary data, which compares how much Chief Executives in smaller-sized councils around the country are paid.

This year, council has agreed to a salary increase that takes the Chief Executive’s total remuneration to $278,500 per annum. This represents an increase of 5.1%, placing Mr Pickford in the middle of the range of CE salaries for smaller councils nationwide.

Mayor Jamie Cleine says: “Having access to comprehensive national data on Chief Executive remuneration gives elected members confidence we are paying a fair and appropriate salary for the role.

This year’s 5.1% increase reflects a catch-up adjustment, as a formal remuneration review has not been undertaken in recent years while we focused on securing a permanent Chief Executive.”

The remuneration change for the Chief Executive will take effect from 1 July 2025.
