Ongoing vandalism of public facilities in Westport a significant cost to ratepayers

17 Feb 2026

An increasing amount of damage to public facilities due to vandalism is being noted around Westport.

Public toilet facilities have been damaged recently in both Palmerston and Brougham Streets, with locks broken and toilet paper repeatedly removed. The toilets and picnic table in front of the NBS Theatre in Palmerston Street have been smeared with grease. Glass bottles have been smashed against the band rotunda in Victoria Square, in the square itself and at the nearby Bridge Club.

Public spaces such as these are maintained by council for the benefit of the Buller community, and it is ultimately ratepayers who bear the cost of repairing the damage.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “Both council and WestReef staff take pride in the maintenance and upkeep of our public spaces and it’s extremely disappointing when intentional damage undermines this.”

Members of the public that witness acts of vandalism are encouraged to take a ‘see something – say something’ approach and contact the Police in the first instance, then report any damage to Buller District Council.
