New HVAC system for Westport's NBS Theatre
Buller District Council is pleased to confirm that the long-planned upgrade to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system at the NBS Theatre in Westport is now set to begin.
Group Manager Infrastructure Services Anthony Blom says: “The HVAC upgrade will deliver modern, energy-efficient climate control to the main auditorium, significantly enhancing year round comfort and supporting the long-term sustainability of this well-used community
facility.”
Importantly, the NBS Theatre will remain open with a slightly reduced schedule of movie screenings and for general use throughout the upgrade works. The theatre’s box office, foyer, and cinema rooms will continue to operate as normal.
However, the main auditorium and stage area will be temporarily closed to the public from 1 October to 31 October 2025, during the key installation period. This time period has been chosen so the project can be completed and the auditorium available for bookings prior to
the busy end-of-year season.
This essential project will be delivered by local contractor Electro Services Limited (ESL), with preliminary construction works to be completed by local builders Coastal Construction Limited. The building consent application has been filed and external prework that does not
require a consent is underway.
The upgrade will include a new air handling unit, floor and ceiling-mounted ducting and vents along with an advanced control system. The system has been carefully designed to improve thermal performance in an energy-efficient way, while respecting the character of the building.
The budget for this project is $457,000, with $85,000 of funding to be provided by the Buller Arts and Recreation Trust (BART).
“Council is working closely with ESL and the NBS Theatre team to ensure minimal disruption and enable safe access for the public to continue enjoying movies in the cinema rooms throughout the staged construction and installation works” continues Mr Blom.
Buller District Council acknowledges the commitment of ESL, and the proactive efforts of staff in coordinating theatre schedules, and access for the public and contractors during this important upgrade.
The movie schedule will be reviewed once the works are underway to ensure contractor noise is not negatively impacting customers’ movie experience.
This initiative forms part of council’s ongoing investment in community assets, supporting local contractors and delivering improved facilities for Buller residents and visitors alike.
