New Civil Defence group launched in Denniston to boost community resilience
A new Civil Defence community group has been established in Denniston, marking a significant step forward for emergency preparedness in one of the West Coast’s most remote communities.
The initiative, supported by the West Coast Civil Defence Emergency Management Group and Buller District Council, aims to empower local residents with the knowledge, tools, and coordination needed to respond effectively in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides or severe weather events.
Group Manager Community Services Krissy Trigg says: “Denniston has a small residential population, but attracts significant numbers of tourists, particularly over the summer months. The community is susceptible to being cut off from vital links in the event of natural disasters and other emergencies, and preparedness is power in these situations.”
A small group of local residents make up the Civil Defence group, which is now equipped with VHF and UHF radios, Starlink solar panels and a solar power bank to facilitate emergency communications. The group will come together for training in August.
Jo Reid, Acting Manager West Coast Emergency Management, praised the formation of the group: “Communities like Denniston are the backbone of our region. When they’re prepared, the whole district is stronger. This group will help ensure that if the worst happens, people know what to do, where to go, and how to help each other.”
The group’s formation aligns with national efforts to boost grassroots resilience. Beyond disaster response, the Denniston Civil Defence group is expected to foster stronger community connections in general, with regular training, emergency exercises, and planning meetings bringing local people together.
As climate change and geological risks continue to challenge New Zealand’s communities, initiatives like this one in Denniston are a timely reminder that preparedness starts at home, and that even the smallest communities can lead the way.
