New carpark facility for Carters Beach Reserve
Locals and visitors heading to ever-popular Carters Beach are set to benefit from the extension of parking facilities at the Carters Beach Reserve.
The work to install a new compacted-surface carpark outside the Carters Beach Hall was completed recently, funded via a 50:50 agreement between Buller District Council and the Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
The project was completed on time and on budget, costing a total of $48,500. The Carters Beach Reserve and Hall Subcommittee was consulted on the carpark design.
A decision was made to not asphalt the surface, as the area is subject to occasional swells from the nearby sea, and the compacted surface that was chosen will be easier and cheaper to maintain under these conditions.
Carters Beach Reserve and Hall Subcommittee Secretary Cody Frewin says: “This new carparking area extends the already-existing carpark and a rope and bollard fence has also been installed, in keeping with other work the subcommittee has undertaken on the reserve. We appreciate the funding received from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund.“
A soakage pit was also constructed to deal with surface water runoff and passed its first test, performing effectively in the heavy rain last Monday.
