New campaign to support Westport businesses get ‘flood-ready’
Is your business ready to respond after a severe flood or other emergency? A new campaign launching this month aims to help more Westport businesses answer that question with confidence.
The Westport Business Resilience & Continuity Campaign launches Wednesday 29th October, 6:30-8:00pm at EPIC (10a Lyndhurst Street) with a free networking event targeting local business owners, managers, and entrepreneurs.
The initiative is part of the Emergency Management component of the Resilient Westport programme of work.
Manager West Coast Emergency Management Claire Brown says it isn’t just about surviving the next major flood or storm – it’s about building a business community that can support each other, help reduce business losses, and recover stronger.
“Actions include simple steps to reduce vulnerability and build relationships with other local businesses – which can make all the difference to getting through when an emergency event occurs.”
The evening will feature local community, industry, and business leaders sharing real experiences from past events and information about actionable strategies for being ready, free business risk assessment tools, and opportunities to further connect within the local business community.
Attendees can also sign up for free business continuity seminars and one-on-one coaching sessions starting in November.
Ms Brown says the campaign recognises the economic and social importance of supporting businesses to prepare for natural hazards.
“Beyond relying on physical infrastructure, the campaign provides businesses with practical information and tools to minimise downtime, protect revenue, and help recover more quickly in an emergency.
“Being ready is not just about having sandbags. It’s also about having the right contacts to call for support and resources, having back-up copies of important files and documents, and knowing what others have successfully done in past disruptions to prepare and recover in the future. It’s about protecting your business and building your network,” says Claire Brown.
All campaign activities – including the launch event, seminars and coaching – are completely free and local businesses are encouraged to get involved.
RSVP is essential for the October 29th event. Register online or email cameron.eade@resorgs.org.nz.
