NBS Theatre screenings reduced due to sound processor fault

14 Oct 2025

Westport’s NBS Theatre is currently operating at reduced capacity, with the 55-seat Bill Moffitt Cinema out of action due to its sound processor malfunctioning on Saturday.

Without this feature, sound content is unable to be played while films are being screened.

The equipment has been assessed, and to fix this unforeseen issue, a replacement part has been ordered from the USA but could take upwards of three weeks to arrive.

The cost to replace the sound processor is estimated to be $10,000 and will be covered by existing budgets.

Some of the NBS Theatre’s equipment is of advanced age, and despite repairs and maintenance, it is unfortunate the sound processor malfunction has followed an earlier issue with the projection server.

Buller District Council’s Group Manager Community Services Krissy Trigg says: “The NBS Theatre is continuing to screen all movies using the smaller Fred Gregory Screen Room, which seats 20 people.

“This does unfortunately mean a reduced number of cinema seats will be available over the next three or four weeks, so booking tickets for movie screenings in advance is essential.

“While it is disappointing to again have reduced capacity so soon after the server was replaced, it is outside of our control. NBS Theatre staff are working to ensure new releases are still provided to the public, and additional screenings have been scheduled to increase capacity.”

Contractors working on the HVAC installation have progressed this work past the stage where it is potentially disruptive to movie screenings, so this project will not impact the movie screening schedule.

Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Updates will be provided via the NBS Theatre’s Facebook page and e-newsletter.
