Mayor praises significant housing deal

11 May 2026

Buller’s deal with the government for 20 homes at an average cost of $60,000 is a huge boon for the community, Mayor Chris Russell says.

The Government has announced the deal with Buller District Council for the two- and three-bedroom homes, which were provided by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) following the 2021/2022 Westport floods.

“These homes up on Paparoa Way are a real asset for Buller’s housing stock. We traditionally don’t have enough rental housing available, and these homes built after the 2021 and 2022 Westport floods are safe, healthy and a good size,” Mayor Russell says.

“As the temporary housing programme is no longer required, this purchase ensures these homes remain in Buller rather than being removed or sold elsewhere.

“We have heard feedback from our community about Buller needing smaller houses, so these homes help meet that need. Since going on the rental market these homes have had a very good occupancy rate and have provided additional revenue for council. This will continue once the loan is repaid,” he says.

The homes are currently rented by Westport residents and workers from surrounding businesses. The actual value of the homes and land has been estimated at $6.6 million, and some of the infrastructure has already been divested to BDC (roads and pipes).

“We will have paid off these homes within five or six years. The purchase has been included in this year’s budget. By creating new revenue streams like this, council can offset some of the costs normally covered by rates, helping to keep increases as low as possible for our community.”

Council will retain these homes as long-term rental properties to support local workers, families, and those needing smaller, healthy homes.

“This is a great investment for Buller District, and for the future of our community,” Mayor Russell says.

The rental properties are managed through Property Brokers.
