Last week for candidates to submit local government election nominations
People planning to run for council in the upcoming local body elections have until 12 pm this Friday, 1 August to get their nominations in.
Nomination forms can be collected from council’s service centres or downloaded from the Buller District Council website.
Elections are currently held in the Buller District for one Mayor, two councillors to represent Inangahua Ward, two councillors to represent Seddon Ward, six councillors to represent the Westport Ward and four community members to represent the Inangahua Community Board. In addition, nominations are being sought for a Buller District trustee for Development West Coast.
The West Coast Regional Council is also seeking two councillors to represent its Buller Constituency.
Chief Executive Officer Simon Pickford says: “We are pleased to see nominations coming in for our local vacancies and remind those considering standing to get their nomination paperwork completed and submitted ahead of Friday’s deadline.
“The only positions yet to receive any nominations are the four vacancies on the Inangahua Community Board and we encourage community members to consider putting themselves forward.”
To be eligible to stand for election, a candidate must be a New Zealand citizen, on the electoral roll (18 years or over), and nominated by two people whose names appear on the electoral roll of the area that the candidate is standing for. Candidates do not need to live in the area that they are standing for.
Those nominating candidates for Buller District Council or the Inangahua Community Board must be residents or ratepayers who are on the electoral roll in that ward.
The voting period begins on Tuesday 9 September and concludes at 12 noon on Saturday 11 October 2025.
To receive voting papers by post, electors must enrol by Friday 1 August, or they will be required to cast a special vote. If you are already on the parliamentary electoral roll, you are automatically enrolled for local council elections as well.
