EPIC Laneway project not proceeding

06 Mar 2026

The proposed EPIC Laneway project will no longer proceed and $50,000 allocated from the Buller District Council Community-Led Revitalisation Fund will be returned in full.

The project encompassed transforming the laneway into a public space featuring greenery, sensory garden elements, locally commissioned murals, and outdoor gaming installations celebrating Westport’s heritage. While the concept generated positive interest, EPIC has told Council its current capacity and changing organisational priorities do not allow for the project to proceed at this time.

Council representatives acknowledged EPIC’s decision.

“We’ve been checking in with EPIC regularly, and they’ve recently let us know they are unable to proceed. It's a shame for the district, but we understand that circumstances change,” says Krissy Trigg, Group Manager Community Services.

A decision on how to use the returned funds will be considered at the upcoming Community Committee meeting in March.
