Deputy Mayor position proposed for Councillor-elect Shayne Barry
Buller District Mayor-elect Chris Russell has announced his intention to appoint Councillor-elect Shayne Barry as Deputy Mayor of the Buller District Council, subject to formal confirmation at the inaugural council meeting.
Cr-elect Barry is recognised for her strong community leadership, extensive engagement experience, and proven governance skills. A long-time resident of Carters Beach and advocate for Westport and the wider district, she is well-placed to support the incoming Mayor and council as they prepare to lead Buller through a period of infrastructure renewal, community resilience, and sustainable growth.
Cr-elect Barry has worked across the region in roles that combine community development, environmental advocacy, and recovery management. She previously served as Marketing Coordinator for the Kawatiri Coastal Trail and as Westport Flood Recovery Welfare Manager, supporting residents during major flood events.
Alongside her professional roles, she has contributed to several community organisations, including as Chair of the Carters Beach Reserve and Hall Subcommittee, Trustee of the Buller Resilience Trust, and Treasurer of Promoting Buller Incorporated.
Her commitment to community wellbeing and connection has been a consistent theme throughout her work. Her election profile described her as “passionate about people, the environment, and our future”, reflecting her long-standing commitment to building a connected and resilient district.
Cr-elect Barry previously served as a Westport Ward Councillor for the Buller District Council, gaining valuable insight into local government responsibilities, accountability, and community representation. In the 2025 local body elections, she was again elected to represent the Westport Ward with 1,460 votes.
Mayor-elect Russell said he was pleased to have someone with Cr-elect Barry’s experience and drive stepping into the Deputy Mayor role.
“Shayne Barry brings the blend of grassroots commitment and governance experience we’re looking for in a Deputy Mayor,” said Mayor-elect Chris Russell. “Her deep ties to our community, her proven leadership in recovery and resilience, and her energy for a sustainable Buller make her an excellent partner in leadership as we move into the next triennium.”
The inaugural meeting of the Buller District Council will be held on 29 October 2025, where the appointment of Deputy Mayor will formally be made.
